Smudge, 2013

Smudge, 2013, pallet wood, ink, dimensions variable

Smudge is a large-scale sculpture composed of letters wedged to each other and balanced in order to form an illegible shape. The text used is taken from T. S Elliot poem The hollow men (1925), “Between the idea/And the reality/Between the motion/And the act/Falls the shadow.” .
Because the work is entirely made of wedged pallet-wood letters, it takes a different shape each time it is assembled, giving a further interpretation to Elliot's verse.

Smudge (2013), installation view of the solo exhibition Silence at Ileana Tounta Contemporary Art Center, Athens
